The mountains surrounding Park City, include over 7,000 acres of preserved open space, and provide over 400 miles of recreational trail. During the summer months, hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are extremely popular in the area, and there is literally something for everyone. For those wishing for a bird's eye view of picturesque Park City, and not fazed by the climb, try the Sweeney Switchbacks, which are accessed from the Town Lift Skier Plaza and lattice the lower ski slopes. For a gentler hike, take the trail at the top of Main Street and Daly Canyon which takes you on an old jeep road past historic silver mine buildings, and on up the mountain to the slopes of Deer Valley. Or for a lateral stroll through Park City you can begin at Zoom, and follow the creek trail which joins with the Rails To Trails at Bonanza Boulevard and takes you as far as you could ever wish; to Wanship and beyond. If you long for a scenic hike without the initial climb, you can drive up Empire Pass, park at the top and follow the ridge trail which affords spectacular views of Park City and Deer Valley ski resorts and to the west, the peaks of Brighton, Alta and Snowbird. As fall turns to winter along the Wasatch Mountains, the trail system becomes blanketed with snow and hiking shoes are traded in for cross-country skis. Ribbons of corduroy and classic track weave in and out of the valleys enticing Nordic skiers and snow-shoe enthusiasts. This seamless, year-round trail system is made possible through a collaborative effort with Park City Municipal Corporation, Snyderville Basin Recreation, Summit County and the ski resorts. It is used and appreciated by locals and visitors alike and is probably the best example in the country today.
