High Star Ranch starts at the floor of the Kamas Valley and climbs eastward more than 2,500 vertical feet into the Uinta Mountains, which in turn stretch east for 100 miles over to Flaming Gorge. The Uintas are the only mountain range in the lower 48 with an east-west orientation, and they start right here in Kamas.
The Uintas are Utah’s highest range with elevations from 8,000 feet to King’s Peak at 13,528 feet, and there are more than a dozen peaks that top 13,000. The pre-Cambrian rock formations that date back 600 million years to when two tectonic plates were forced together to form nearly vertical fault lines play host to more than 1,000 mountain lakes, 400 miles of streams, and views that can reach 60 to 90 miles.
The center of the Uinta Mountains is the 460,000 acre High Uintas Wilderness area in which no roads, motorized vehicles, or even bikes are allowed. Horses and backpackers abound, however, and the area is popular for hiking, camping, fishing, and horseback riding.
