Dr. Sam Hendrix

Sam grew up in the small ranching community of Bayfield, Colorado, so his “training” with horses started almost as soon as he could walk.  After spending two years studying to become a petroleum engineer at a prestigious engineering school, the world of horses called him back, and he transferred to Colorado State University (the top equine sciences program in the US.)

Sam graduated from CSU in 1997 with dual bachelor’s degrees in Equine Sciences and Biology.  Sam continued his education at Colorado State University Veterinary School, where he worked 40+ hours a week while carrying his studies and graduating 4th in his class in 2002.

Following graduation, Sam joined Arizona Equine Medical and Surgical Center, a high-end referral practice. He was then chosen to return to Colorado State University to complete a 3 year residency and master’s position in equine surgery and lameness. He accepted a faculty position upon graduation, where he trained students and surgical residents.

Upon his move to Utah, Sam became the first and only residency-trainedequine surgeon in the state.  He will become the firstand only boarded surgeon in Utah when he completes the final portion of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons Board Certification Exam in February 2011.

Sam has published articles in multiple peer reviewed journals and lay magazines, and has presented research and educational seminars nationally.  He has served as a consultant for several private veterinary practices and medical device testing companies.  Sam is very actively involved in the Utah equine community, both as a veterinarian and as a board member of the Utah Horse Council, which helps to promote and support equine activity in the state.
