Like her father and grandfather before her, Jessica Morgans is a professional cutting horse trainer who began her showing career at the age of 4. Her experience includes training 13 years of full time reining and cutting, 7 years of equine critical care and 5 years as assistant trainer under Gary Putnam at Draggin A Ranch, Texas.
Jessica has won awards in all classes, both English and Western disciplines, including several National Reserve World Championships. She brings versatility and a broad range of experience to her clients at High Star, which range from serious competitors, to trail riders, to kids involved in the ranch’s Buckaroos Rodeos.
A Fresh Approach and a Soft Hand
Training within male dominated disciplines, she has found that a soft, patient approach has resulted in horses and clients that gain trust and confidence, resulting in fewer setbacks. “A softer hand keeps the horse from becoming sour and resistant and leads to a more productive and rewarding life.”
Jessica’s broad background allows her to pull techniques from different disciplines to engage the particular talents of each horse and rider. “I find keeping the approach fresh and coaching each horse and rider individually translates into better results.”
This creates a more adaptable horse, and she believes that by continually offering new challenges, the horse becomes agile-minded and focused. “During training, too much time spent perfecting a specific task can make a horse numb, so I often like to integrate new activities.” For example, Jess has found that a relaxing trail ride following a training session can provide needed mind relief to a sour or bored horse.
Jessica has the ability to accommodate all ages and levels of riders, from beginners to experienced competitors. She begins with an open, honest, non-judgmental assessment, and tries to ensure that the disposition and ability levels of horse and rider are well matched. This is very important for building a successful partnership.
Regular consistent training is encouraged and sessions can be custom designed to suit each individual’s goals and needs. Every aspect of each horse’s care is carefully monitored, from grooming and turn-outs to daily nutrition because Jessica knows that every detail contributes to a healthy, safe, responsive, well-behaved horse.
